Wash. state mom to give birth to child diagnosed with fatal spine disease

Like many other moms in her region, Robles is struggling to understand why her unborn child was diagnosed with anencephaly—a fatal spinal cord disease. State officials acknowledged on Tuesday that they are baffled by a disturbing uptick in the number of unborn and newborn children in Benton, Yakima, and Franklin counties who were diagnosed with anencephaly, spina bifida, or other neural tube defects.
